The good folks at Top Speed have cobbled together a rather interesting map that shows the most-searched car brands across the world. China loves Tesla, it seems!
-
The specific data used was taken from Google searches over a 12-month period from April 2014 to March 2015. That’s why it doesn’t line up precisely with the 2014 Google Trends report which, for example, lists Ford as the top search for the United States rather than Toyota.
- -Other interesting tidbits from the data include China’s apparent obsession with Tesla, and Japan’s BMW love. On whole, however, the data seems to indicate a massive interest in Toyota. That said, “most searched” doesn’t translate to “most sold” in all cases, as Top Speed notes. China’d be straight up full of Teslas if that were true, and the country is not.
-Toyota’s dominance in searches extends to Africa, which Top Speed speculates is due to the brand’s affordable fare. Mercedes-Benz makes their mark in the northwest of the continent, however, and there’s a decent share of BMW fans present.

As always, it’s important to remember that a different set of data or methodology could potentially skew all of this differently. What was searched for heavily last September may not even make a blip this month. Additionally, Google searches don’t always have to do the desire to purchase a car, as “do Teslas explode” would add another bean to the same counter as “I love Tesla cars why can’t everyone just drive them.”
